Wheaton asked many adults how often they snorted, gasped, or had pauses in their respiration whilst they were asleep. Then, she assessed the adults’ emotional health with standard test for depression. 6% of the men and 3% of the women had already been diagnosed with sleep apnea by their doctors. Over a third of the men and about a fifth of the women reported snoring more than five times a week. The researchers found that the men with sleep apnea were twice as likely to report signs and symptoms of depression, while women with sleep apnea were five times as likely to show signs of depression.
Wheaton’s observation concluded that women and men who reported stoppage of breath during sleep more than 5 times a week had triple the danger of being depressed. This new information furnished by the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention has determined a connection between obstructive sleep apnea and depression.
